FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Saturday, September 14, 2013

Shuswap Theatre announces the line up of productions for its 37th Season and you can catch a preview at their Annual Open House Saturday, September 21 at 7:30pm. The preview includes complimentary refreshments, appetizers and cash bar. The evening will feature the directors of their three mainstage productions telling the audience about the show they are directing as well as a scene being acted out.

The fall show, directed by Julia Body is the popular musical ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ (book & lyrics by Howard Ashman, Music by Alan Menken) and runs November 15 thru 30.  A down-and-out skid row floral assistant becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. Soon “Audrey II” grows into an ill-tempered, foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite, finally revealing itself to be an alien creature poised for global domination!

The winter production which will run February 21 thru March 8, 2014 is ‘Distracted’, a drama written by Lisa Loomer and directed by Adele Kuyek.  What’s wrong with nine-year-old Jesse? He can’t sit still, he curses, he raps, and you can’t get him into-or out of-pajamas. His teacher thinks it’s Attention Deficit Disorder. Dad says, “He’s just a boy!” And Mama’s on a quest for
answers. Is Jesse dysfunctional, or just different? She talks to professionals and neighbors alike, each with their own diagnosis for Jesse. Throughout, Jesse is an offstage voice becoming louder and angrier, but he is in danger of fading away and his parents’ marriage is in peril. Everyone is distracted, even the actors-they’re breaking character! A hilarious, provocative, and poignant look at a modern family and an epidemic dilemma.

The third mainstage production runs April 25 thru May 30, 2014, a comedy directed by Evelyn Birch. ‘The Compleat Wrks of Wllm Shkspr’ (abridged) was written by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield. This fast-paced, gag-a-second delight deconstructs all 37 of the bards plays, plus the sonnets, into a two act whirlwind. Come prepared to be part of the action as the audience becomes integral to this unique experience. Whether you love or hate Shakespeare the boundless energy and enthusiasm on stage will be sure to please. This will be Shuswap Theatre’s entry into the 2014 OZone Festival to be hosted in Winfield, May 2014

You”ll enjoy a sample of the fun and games of Shuswap Theatre’s Laughing Gas Improv troupe, as well as hear about the Christmas production Dec. 14 and 15, ‘The Nutcracker’.  Shiswap Theatre is co-presenting with FACES of Blind Bay and the show is more than traditional ballet. The ‘Nutcracker’ will include all their students; dance, music, drama and art.

Another feature of the evening will be the introduction of ‘Ida and Old Baldy’s’ Seniors Theatre directed by Peter Blacklock. Seniors Theatre runs Tuesdays, starting October 1 from 9am – 11am at Shuswap Theatre, Tuesday afternoons at Sorrento Memorial Hall and Wednesday mornings at Cedar Heights.
