Some of all Fears by Duncan Morris

As the Canadian federal election draws near the government has been dialing up the fear-mongering and threats to our security. In a recent speech supporting his anti-terror bill Prime Minister Harper said “A great evil has been descending upon our world, an evil which has been growing more and more powerful: violent jihadism.”

This is in sharp contrast to the rhetoric coming from US National security advisor Susan Rice who is quoted as stating “We cannot afford to be buffeted by alarmism in a nearly instantaneous news cycle.” President Obama further went on to remark “No God condones terror”. George Bush listed off a group of Nations in his 2002 “Axis of Evil” speech causing and the subsequent fall out that we are still currently grappling with.

There is power in words. Unfortunately, some of that power can be self fulfilling.
